Abstract:Companies used to retrench and fire people; now they downsize and engineer layoffs. Either way, the process can backfire if not conducted properly. To make sure the desired efficiencies are gained from the remaining work force, layoffs must be conducted with advanced planning of remaining employees. Downsizing is a systematic reduction of a workforce by an employer, usually as a result of financial losses, cash flow difficulties, loss of government contracts, technological changes, or international competition.
