Abstract:In a year of downsizing and layoffs, compensation rose by 30%, on average. When United Technologies Chairman Robert F. Daniell strolls into the Carton Hotel in Washington on Apr. 23 for his company's annual meeting, he should expect to see nothing but a sea of happy faces. After all, the company's stock outpaced the market last year, throwing off a return of 55% for shareholders in 1995 alone. Yet back in the factories and offices of the far-flung conglomerate, some employees are stirring - as they are at companies large and small across the country.
