Abstract:Taiwan's carriers will need more than just direct routes to the mainland. When a China-owned vessel, the Far East Glory sailed into Taiwan's Kaohsiung port last month flying the island's national flag, it wasn't out to make waves. The symbolism was more that of conciliation than confrontation. And the gesture was reciprocated. Days later, the Uni-Order, owned by Taiwan's Uniglory Marine Corp., headed for Xiamen on China's southwestern coast - flying the five stars and red field of the People's Republic.
