Abstract:The conclusion of this paper is that the effort by social groups and competitively-disadvantaged firms to secure a social clause in their country's foreign trade agreements has gained some ground. Public opinion in support of better working conditions in poor countries seems to be strong and international firms have to address such concerns if they are to maintain their profitability and positive image in the society. This paper suggests that since the social clause issue will continue to remain prominent in the agenda of trade policies and negotiations, international firms who want access to low cost and efficient production sites abroad would have to adopt a more integrated and inclusive approach to allay public concerns.
