Abstract:In the last decade there has been an extensive growth in international mergers and acquisitions (IM & As). It has been argued that the most important work during the IM & As is the management of people; this is why the role of HR managers is becoming more important and demanding. HR manager have to play a more strategic role, they have to be able to promote company wide integration of HR practices and simultaneously support the transaction of business units. The article concentrates on the little known role and activities of HR managers in IM & A process. The roles of corporate HR managers at various stages of IM & A processes were examined in three Finnish international organizations with the help of semi-structured interviews among corporate level managers. The author has applied the Ulrich’s (1997) model of four HR roles and considers these roles in different stages of the IM & A process. The results show how the HR issues are very important in the IM & A process. Also the HR managers play an significant role in the process, but this is not always self-evident.
