Abstract:This study draws on interviews with managers and employees in the Swedish IT consultant sector. It is suggested that the interviewees' (here as: intrws.) distinction btw. and assessment of workers (as: wrks.) of value and wrks. without value to justify and explain these lay-offs, are diffused by stereotyped images of gendered (as: g-ed.) qualities, reflecting a g-ed. work ideal. As to the intrws. argued, not everybody had the ... valued competence of an ideal consultant (as: i-cons.) and those failing to fulfil the requirements of an i-cons. were subsequently laid off. Since the behaviour, qualities, technical skills and knowledge considered necessary for ... an i-cons. are associated with hegemonic masculinity, male qualities and men's experiences, these arguments justify womens' exclusion from this occupation.
