Abstract:Based on a survey of over 200 Finnish university-level people working abroad, this paper studies the career capital of both self-initiated and company assigned expatriates. The aim of the study is to explore the development of career capital in relation to issues such as individual backround variables, employer and task variables, motives and compensation, already discussed by previous research. Much of earlier research has targeted company assigned expatriates - however, the results of data collected for this study indicate that the proportion of self-initiated expatriates is very high, and further research on the issue is needed. The findings of this study also indicate significant similarities and some differences in the career capital development of self-initiated and company assigned expatriates.
