Abstract:The purpose of the article is to depict one path to follow when leading longitudinal distribution channel studies. The objective is met by linking a network approach to marketing systems. Distribution systems are conceived as networks of relationships. Central aspects of the industrial network approach and the dynamics of distribution systems are discussed. The concept of loosely coupled systems is introduced following the recent literature, and it is concluded that theoretical assumptions and ideas behind loose coupling can serve as a vehicle to develop new knowledge on the dynamics of organizational change in marketing channels. Seven basic arguments behind the theory of loose coupling are summarized.
