Abstract:A number of major issues that impact the design and use of large, complex man-machine and sociotechnical systems are discussed. These are issues with which technological forecasters and planners must deal. It is proposed that systems theory can provide insights toward restructuring the present, dominant, theoretical and design paradigm. To illustrate the various issues, the specific approaches of factors and ergonomics within system's science are examined in considerable detail. Several recent failures of complex systems are reviewed in terms of person-generated contributions to failure that transcend customary design considerations.
