Abstract:During the last decade, changing consumption habits have rearranged the popular music market. A pattern with live music attendance (henceforth as: l-m-att.) getting an increasing share of the market has emerged. This study analyzes the demand for the popular music sector considering its double dimension as supplier of live concerts and prerecorded (herein as: prcd.) music. The 2006/2007 wave of Spain's "Survey on Habits and Cultural Practices" is used. A bivariate probit model is estimated for l-m-att. and the purchase of prcd. music. Described is the profile of the average and frequent consumer in both markets, showing some similarities, yet some striking differences. In addition, there is found evidence of demand complementarities, with a direct causal link from prcd. music to l-m-att., helping to explain recent institutional changes.
