Abstract:This paper concerns the attitudes of artists to the commercial issues. This study focused to a single genre (jazz), a single country (Poland) and a single artistic level. The study is based on three biographical interviews involving four jazz musicians. The results are similar to earlier studies which have shown that artists are not motivated by commercial success. However, the study suggests that jazz musicians can engage with markets through a many different methods, which are strongly influenced by their artistic identities.
