Abstract:Mission statements (hereafter as: m-stmt./m-stmts.) are widely considered to be important to business success. This paper reports on the relationship of m-stmt. quality to financial performance (here as: fin-perf). The findings indicate that most elements in m-stmts. are not associated with fin-perf. M-stmts. containing phrases referring to what may be viewed as the fundamental rules of business have a significant positive relationship with fin-perf.: be concerned with your employees, be responsible to the society in which you do business, and emphasize and communicate your value system.
