Abstract:The development of Linux is usually taken as an example of the potential of non-commercial motivation and virtual coordination in the Internet Economy. The paper shows that the success factors of the Linux development are a consequent prolongation of principles already applied in modern firms. The article analyses the communication and decision structures of the Linux development and refers to modern economic approaches to explain the motivation of Linux programmers. The analysis demonstrates that a transfer of the successful Linux mechanisms in commercial contexts is possible. The paper provides a substantial list of references on this subject.
