Abstract: | The author suggests that the kinds of monitoring and verification that representatives of the U.S. Sentencing Commission have recently suggested as a future requirement of organizational ethics compliance programs are a mistake. They are a mistake because they are counterproductive and shift what should be the true emphasis of the Commission from getting into compliance those organizations that are not already in compliance to the mistaken emphasis on needlessly harassing the organizations that have already complied through a spirit of goodwill. Furthermore, something intangible but still very important will be lost if such programs are required. That something is at the heart of civilized society itself: moral worth and moral idealism. |
