Abstract:This study explores the perspective that increasing interfirm modularity lowers the need for interfirm knowledge sharing, that is, modularity complements outsourcee ignorance. Based on data analyses on 209 alliances between firms from United States (U.S.) and software services firms in Russia, Ireland, and India, strong support is provided for this idea. The theoretical elaboration and empirical testing of the complementarities btw. modularity and outsourcee ignorance has significant implications for strategy theory.
