Abstract:A decade ago, managers perceived "shared values" as flimsy subject matter, too ethereal to be talked about in the boardroom. The climate is now changing. The seriousness of interest is supported by the results of in-depth interviews with forty-five executives, senior managers, and management consultants. One problem is that current values lexicon is out of date and out of touch with the needs of the modern corporation. The new research results can form the basis for an improved vocabulary, one that will help leaders talk about and manage values. Effective management of shared values can help build competitive advantage, aid in achieving person-organization fit when hiring, and provide a catalyst for organizational change.
