Abstract:A new form of organization - delayered, downsized, and operating through a network of market-driven business units - is changing the nature of global competition. It is called a "network organization" - a lean, highly flexible, "disaggregated" company. This form of organization was identified in the early 1980s. Three forms of network structure have emerged: internal (exemplified by General Motors' components divisions), stable (such as used by BMW), and dynamic (shown by Lewis Galoob Toys). The spread of network organizations is creating new agendas for both managers and business schools. It means that previously undefined management roles will emerge and a basic reconsideration of how the 21st century managers are trained will be necessary.
