| Abstract: | Over 200 pay professionals attended in January 1993 the IPM annual conference. The subject 'Compensation policies for the empowered organization' indicated the direction of thinking in many organizations. A common theme was decentralizing and devolving remuneration decisions to a level as close as possible to individuals, recognizing the circumstances of their team or unit and their contribution. The authors consider whether such thinking is a general trend, what the drivers for such changes are and the evidence for success/failure in undertaking such extensive restructuring of remuneration policies and practices. |
