Abstract:The neighbouring countryside is becoming polluted by the endless stream of cars on regular pilgrimages to out-of-town shopping centres. During the past 15 years, shopping has changed dramatically. Many retailers have abandoned city and town centres for out-of-town shopping "cities". This has resulted in a mass exodus and the ensuing neglect of deserted towns, whose downfall arguably began in the 1960s and 1970s under an onslaught of bad planning and design.
