Abstract:The p-chart based on the binomial distribution is not useful for many processes when p is small even when p is known, because the sample size required is very large. There are practical problems in areas such as electronics manufacturing and medical supplies sterilization where p can be 0,01 or smaller. Any type of binomial chart will be inadequate for these applications, and another form of process control is required. This paper introduces Q-statistics based on the geometric distribution, which can be used for such high quality processes. In fact, smaller values of p give more precise charting methods.
