Abstract: | Corporations will start splitting into operations that make sense on their own - feeding the merger wave as spin-offs recombine into larger companies that focus on a single business. The urge to merge has always been muted in Europe. Most U.S. companies accept the pain of mergers as a way to boost their competitive clout. In Europe, though, many players in banking, airlines, autos , and other industries have avoided mergers and contented themselves instead with local markets and so- earnings - or even losses. |
