Abstract: | As 1996 edged its way into history, Asia focused on one question: Is the economic miracle losing steem? That might seem like an idle worry, with most growth rates still at least twice as high as those in the West. But there is a price for nearly a decade for fast-paced growth. That price: widening current-account deficits, rising labor costs and weakening productivity. Hardest hit was Thailand. Its stock market fell to a three-year low, weighed down by weak political leadership. Slower growth raised the specter of bad debts, especially in property. |
