Abstract:Although experimental evidence on the private provision of public goods abounds, non-experimental evidence has been rarely brought to bear on the topic. This study views trade protection to an industry as a public good that is privately provided through the lobbying activities of firms. The methodology is to empirically validate predictions from Bergstrom et al. (1986) about the lobbying behavior of firms that provide the public good. a particular prediction is that a favorable change in the wealth distribution of the lobbying coalition will lead to greater contributions to purchase the public good.
