Abstract:This paper examines chief executives' view on information technology (IT) and senior IT executives. The paper offers executives expect of the chief information officers (CIO) and the IT function. CEOs believe that the characteristics needed to achieve success are almost identical for both chief executives and IT officers, with the addition of technical knowledge for the CIOs. Except for the technical knowledge, CEOs believe that senior IT executives often fail to demonstrate the skills or take advantage of unique opportunities to attain them. The initiatives CIOs can pursue to address these perceived shortcomings are to a "big picture" perspective, enhance personal skills, raise awareness of the value of IT, report results effectively, establish relationships and increase visibility, and become a change agent.
