Abstract:Statistics, even if taken with a grain of salt, show that the Internet is indeed transforming business. According to Ernst & Young´s 1999 Internet Shopping Study, the 115 respondents selling online expect their Web-based sales to increase from 1 percent of total revenues today to 9 percent by 2001. But for every opportunity, there is always an obstacle. It expands markets but also adds competitors. It eases some business processes but complicates others. Clearly the amount of impact and the amount of change depends on the industry and the degree of threat and opportunity that the Internet poses.
