Abstract:Many banks offer their private clients investment counseling as a free service, but charge them higher volume-based transaction fees in return. This pricing approach leads to adverse selection as it attracts unprofitable clients and deters profitable ones. This article presents and discusses empirical evidence on consumer attitudes concerning new possible tariffs to be offered by a large German bank. It is found that many consumers are willing to pay a separate counseling fee if the quality of the counseling service is improved. The authors also demonstrate that conjoint measurement analysis can be applied to reveal consumer preferences for different tariffs as well as for tariff components. These preferences are a viable input when designing two- part and optional tariffs for investment counseling.
