Abstract:Then enduring size and semi-subsistence character of Poland’s agricultural sector continue to be a cause of concern even as the country prepares to enter the European Union (EU) later in 2004. EU accession should not, however, be taken as synonymous with the completion of the process of transition: much remains to be done and it is by no means self-evident that entry into the Union will immediately hasten the necessary reforms in each and every case. Restructuring of the large part of the country’s agricultural sector that remains locked firmly in history is undoubtedly the most conspicuous example where little impetus to change can be detected.
