Abstract:The article explores the relationships between top management team (TMT) characteristics, such as age, educational level, and international experience, and international diversification of a firm from the executive demography and upper-echelons perspective. An extensive study was conducted among US-based firms which are relatively large and internationally diversified. The results show how TMTs in firms with higher levels of international diversification are characterized by higher levels of education, shorter organizational tenures, younger executives and broader international experience. Further, the findings illustrate that in better performing companies the relationships between TMT characteristics and international diversification are more determining than in lower-performing companies.
