Abstract:It is questioned how the extremely uncertain front end of innovation, that is, managing the fuzzy front end, can be taught to graduate students. Herein, described and analyzed are experiments with experiential, problem-based learning focused on the front end of innovation with the focus on the learning and cross-organizational integration of student teams. An experiential course called 'From an idea to a business plan in product development' was developed at the Dept. of Industial engineering and management of Helsinki University of Technology, Finland in cooperation with an actual company, and piloted with four student groups in 2007 and 2008. Data on this novel course were gathered through participant observation, team self-assessment and questionnaires. This paper reports favourable results for the course design effectiveness etc.
