Abstract:Two different answers have been given to the problems confronting American business: follow the path to excellence, or adopt Japanese management techniques. It is pointed out that to apply these principles at some stages of organizational evolution may lead to poor performance,even failure. A common critical point in the models of organizational evolution is revealed: the very nature of the firm changes as a business grows in size and matures; these are not changes in degree but fundamental changes in kind.
