Abstract:The changing face of employment in Britain is examined. The area of protection provided through collective bargaining is cleared up. It is discussed why the legal regulation safety net fails. The "typical worker" is portrayed both male and female. The sectoral shift in employment is examined. The new working-time patterns are analyzed. The need of protection in case of typical as well as atypical worker is discussed. Workers in relatively disadvantaged positions are identified. Many atypical workers, some categories in the self-employed group are not in trade unions or fall outside the protections. The safety net of legal employment protection rights is investigated, suggestions are made.
