Abstract: | An intelligent decision-support system is described which was developed for one of the largest suppliers of phosphate-based chemical products, to support the evaluation of mining reserves and determination of optimal mining strategies. The underlying optimization model for each drilling sample, which incorporates the knowledge of mining experts, is a zero-one integer programming model. Solved with a highly specialized branch-and-bound code, the time to find an optimal solution for each problem is almost instantaneous. While the company management feels that it is impossible to place a dollar value on the information provided by this system, they have used it in making investment decisions involving over 40 million dollars. |
