Abstract: | Corporate boards need to work to stay away from the traps that force every member to go along with the majority. Devil's advocates represent one easy-to-implement solution. Suggestions for increasing the effectiveness of boards of directors are dealt with. It begins by discussing the characteristics that make it less likely that the boards will disagree with the chairperson. Next, the effects of excessive consensus and "groupthink" within the board is covered. Finally, an approach called devil's advocacy is discussed. This can improve group decisions. It is described in what ways the principles of devil's advocacy can applied to board decision making. |
