Abstract:When managers tolerate a culture of mediocrity, they reinforce the most pernicious barrier to change. The quest for the quick fix is the second big hurdle to legitimate change. The primary challenge before managers is to confront the basic impediments to real change, which means ousting both cultures of mediocrity and obsessions with the quick fix. This demands a new type of leadership role, a new set of decision rules, and a new perspective on dealing with employees.
