Abstract:Teacher appraisals have resulted in improved performance by both individuals and schools, argues Kenneth Fox. He looks at how this process measures up to guidelines outlined in an earlier PM article on the pitfalls of performance management. Teacher appraisal is helping to motivated both teachers and their appraisers. Although initially anxious, almost half a million teachers in 25,000 state schools are finding that appraisal is aiding their career development, while schools believe that teaching and learning have improved.
