Abstract:Analyzing the long-run implications of the new wave of preferential trading blocks in the world has become a growth industry for economists and political scientists. That is hardly surprising, since over 80 such arrangements are now in effect, with more than a third of them having come into existence in the past decade. Agreements of this kind, of course, cover a wide gamut. Exceptionally, they call for the deep integration of national economies in a genuine common market, such as the European Union represents.
