Abstract:The article investigates whether union learning representatives'(URL) characteristics and management support have influence on the relationship between URLs and employer-provided training. Data from the 2004 Workplace employment relations survey is utilized to explore this issue. The results of the analysis of this data reveal that a significant amount of ULRs have not spent time on matters associated with employee training in their representative roles during the past 12 months. The analysis also suggests that training incidence is no higher in workplaces where an "active" URL exists than elsewhere. However, a "hybrid" URL fulfilling other representative roles in addition to the URL role results in higher training incidence than a "dedicated" URL.
