Abstract:The results of the last begotiations within the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, the so-called Uruguay Round, represented a significant step towards a widespread liberalisation of tariff barriers, but it is evident that members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have substantially extended the use of other forms of protectionism. According to various studies, this apparent shift from tariff protection to non-tariff instruments such as quotas or anti-dumping has probably occurred before the conclusion of Uruguay Round negotiations.
