Abstract:Based on data of wholesale prices for antibiotics sold to U.S. drugstores, this study tests the growing theoretical literature on 'countervailing power'. Large pharmacies get a modest discount for antibiotics produced by competing suppliers but no discount for antibiotics produced by monopolists. As further evidence for the importance of supplier competition, it is found that hospitals receive substantial discounts relative to drugstores, due to hospitals' greater ability to induce supplier competition via restrictive formularies.
