Abstract:The content of the domestic mission statement is analyzed to determine which modifications help to ensure that the mission statement will continue to provide the necessary framework in a multinational corporation (MNC). The multinationalized mission statement explains the ultimate aim of the firm, providing a unity of direction that transcends both divergent managerial perspectives and geographically dispersed strategic decision makers. The multiplicity of contexts requires that the primary market and customer be redefined and their importance reassessed. A MNC mission statement must express - beyond growth and profitability - a bi-directional flow of benefits between the firm and its multiple environments.
