Abstract:The potential for tension always exists between the economic purpose of an organization and the personal or shared purposes of its members. Moreover, this tension is likely to be high in organizations that are confronted with frequent change in economic, political or technological conditions. It is shown that such tension is particularly harmful when change is necessary. Unfortunately, change often is not enacted until a problem has taken on crisis proportions and staunch opponents of change are persuaded that it is unavoidable. Arguments are presented that companies can manage crises more effectively by following the basic architectural principle: form follows function.
