Abstract:Very few beds are imported, brands are very strong and production is concentrated among a few large manufacturers. There are three sectors in the bed products market: 1) mattresses, 2) bases and 3) headboards, bedsteads bed-ends and bunk beds. The majority of beds are constructed of wood. Retail sales of beds peaked in 1988 in constant price terms and then entered an erratic downward phase. The largest bed manufacturer is Silentnight Holdings. 95% of mattress sales are of interior spring design. Nearly two-thirds of their sales value is now accounted for by double mattresses. 2.36 m bases were produced in 1991. Production volume has been volatile, but the trend over the last decade has been upward. The value of production in the third sector fell sharply in 1991.
