Abstract: | Only as these markets move into 1997 have the long-awaited signs of increased activity in the housing sector become perceptible, and even these signs are still variable and patchy. Meanwhile, suppliers of domestic electrical appliances have encountered improved demand but only under conditions of intense pressure on prices. Further closures of retail outlets and reorganisations among companies have added to job losses and the insecure feeling. The appliance sector, especially, continues to diverge with new design and performance features. The survey deals with consumer spending, foreign trade (yrs. 1992-1995/96), output figures, prices and prospects, especially in the United Kingdom. In the foreign trade, also other countries are referred to. |
