Abstract:This paper offers an insight into the strategy pursued by two South Korean carmakers, Daewoo and Hyundai. On the face of it, both carmakers appear to have similar structures as both belong to large industrial groups known as chaebols. Yet the globalisation strategies employed by each were very different, and yielded differing amounts of success. The paper discusses the learning experience of each company which reinforced its choice of strategy. For example, the lack of obstacles facing Daewoo as it embarked on building up its eastern European manufacturing may have accelerated its capacity expansion. The difficulties experienced by Hyundai in its Canadian operations acted as a brake on its overseas expansion. The study also contains some general observations useful for any student or practitioner of globalisation.
