Abstract:Traditional economic analysis using a crop production function approach has assumed that all variable factors, including irrigation water, are fully employed in the crop production process. However, this paper demonstrates that economic benefits of irrigation water are overestimated when the crop production function, and therefore the irrigation water demand function, is expressed in terms of irrigation water supplied, rather than consumptive irrigation water use.
