Abstract:Review of 2 experiments to investigate effects of biased instructions on the accuracy of eyewitness identification in a field setting where some subjects were unaware of their participation in an experiment, using 76 students to observe a theft and identify culprit from a target-absent lineup, and 63 students to investigate whether cultural or methodological factors affect the results, who received either unbiased or biased instructions. Method, procedure, lineup, prior versus no prior debriefing, biased versus unbiased instructions, dependent variables, the identification response and time, certainty, commitment and subjectively experienced pressure. Seven Tables illustrate the study.
