Abstract:The rich oral traditions and exuberant humour of irreverence and complicity of the complex, often conflictual, multiracial societies of Latin America are at the root of the region's vibrant communications media. The early commercialization of Latin American broadcasting further fueled the media's growth. Latin American radio and television audiences - fed by streams of workers surging to the cities; immigrants searching for meaning in their new environments; and middle class eager for music, entertainment and news - soon grew to be among the largest in the world.
