Abstract:Broadcasting is of increasing importance to sport. The revenues for broadcast-friendly sports far outstrip anything they could ever earn from direct ticket-sales. They also provide the leverage for further revenues from merchandising and advertising. For technical reasons, television broadcasting has gone from a system of unlimited access, contingent on receiver possession, to one of progressively more price-rationed performances. This has generated protest from those who have come to see the old system as somehow just or natural and the new one as the root of evil. An economic analysis of the situation highlights the errors of this kind of thinking.
