Abstract: | In this paper, Oneworld, SkyTeam, Star Alliance, and Wings, the four global airline alliances (hereafter as: alls.) members' (of 2002) opinions on the alliances' impact on their traffic and on their performance in general are gathered. A comprehensive survey of the alls. management departments of airlines participating in the alls. was carried out. It was examined which type of co-operation among carriers (code share, frequent flyer programmes, strategic alls. with or without antitrust immunity) have produced the most positive impact on traffic and which types of route (short or long haul, (non)-hub–(non)-hub) have been most affected. Furthermore, the respondent airlines quantified the effect that alls. have had on specific areas of their operation, such as traffic, load factors, costs, revenue and fares. It is shown that each of the four global alls. groupings has experienced different results according to the type of collaboration agreed amongst their member airlines. |
