Abstract:An effective means for smoothing highway traffic and reducing travel delay on toll highways is considered to be the Open road tolling (ORT) design. This paper shows that ORT can also achieve significant air quality benefits (here as: a-q-bnfts.) over the conventional toll plaza design. The large a-q-bnfts. like the reduction (by 37 percent) of near roadside carbon monoxide (CO) concentration levels and decrease (by 58 percent) of diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions have great implications to the regional efforts of reducing mobile source air pollution etc.
